Highlights
  • WhatsApp Plus is now actively rolling out across different countries with premium features,
  • Mostly cosmetic, the premium subscription allows unlocks up to 20 pinned chats, 10+ custom ringtones, and 18 theme colors.
  • Available as an optional subscription plan, users can still continue to use their regular plan - free for life.

Earlier last month, we reported on WhatsApp Plus being tested as a premium subscription service. Turns out the service is finally out and about, priced at EUR2.49/mo in Europe, MXN29/mo in Mexico, and PKR 229/mo in Pakistan. Launched as an optional plan, WhatsApp Plus unlocks a few cosmetic upgrades that will improve your user experience across WhatsApp; however, it isn’t available for WhatsApp Business yet.

According to the folks at WABetaInfo, who reported on this subscription tier earlier last month, WhatsApp is rolling out the ‘Plus’ tier with a huge collection of exclusive premium stickers. The tier allows users to choose their own WhatsApp custom icon for the app itself and even an array of 18 colors to choose from for the theme.

Gone are the days when you could only pin 3 chats. WhatsApp Plus allows users to pin up to 20 chats. There are 10 exclusive premium ringtones to choose from that you can apply to either multiple chats or group chats, or you can even create a custom list of contacts, such as a ‘No Call Pickup Crew.’ I am just guessing. Think about each group on WhatsApp buzzing with a different ringtone every time someone texts and calls.

As of writing this, WhatsApp Plus is still rolling out and available to a limited number of users. Once the developers feel the app is working fine, we will see it expand and reach more people. Additionally, the paid WhatsApp subscription tier is rolling out across Android, which means the WhatsApp client for iOS is planned for a later date.

Note that this is an optional plan. For anyone who chooses to let go of the subscription, they will still get to use WhatsApp as usual, which includes end-to-end encryption, voice and video calls, and more, free of cost.
