Prior to the official release of the first-generation foldable iPhone, it appears that Apple is considering options beyond its initial model. The information comes from a reputable source, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who said that the company is working on a roadmap that includes a second-generation and third-generation foldable iPhone, which could arrive as early as 2027 and 2028, respectively.
Moreover, the report also mentions that the (3rd Gen) foldable iPhone, slated to release in 2028, might boast slightly larger displays on both the inside and outside. However, the company has not confirmed these details, obviously.
Third-generation foldable iPhone could get larger displays
Even though the report didn’t reveal the exact screen sizes for the third-generation foldable iPhone. Gurman notes on his “Power On” newsletter, the displays are expected to be slightly larger than those on the first two generations.
Notably, the first foldable iPhone is speculated to feature a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch cover display. If this turns out accurate, the 2028 model could build on those dimensions with larger screens.
This is significant because earlier reports had primarily focused only on the first-gen foldable iPhone and a possible second-generation model. Now, Gurman’s latest report marks the first to suggest a potential third-generation model.
What to expect from Apple’s first foldable iPhone
Based on current reports, Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to launch in September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series. However, there’s still a possibility of delay due to a hurdle in the final adjustments in the manufacturing process.
