Supply and testing challenges could delay availability
The latest information comes from an exclusive report by Channel News, claiming the delay was mainly because of the supply and pricing issues and that Apple was also having testing problems with production units. Further, the outlet notes that suppliers had encountered more production issues than expected.
As a result, the issues could delay broader availability of the device, with the United States expected to get limited initial shipments before any other international regions.
Australian carriers and a major retailer have reportedly indicated that Apple’s foldable iPhone will now hit the shelves immediately. In other words, customers in Australia may get their hands on the iPhone 18 series, but they will have to wait for the availability of the foldable model. Initially, the foldable model is expected to be released in the US, followed by other key markets such as China.
Basically, Apple is likely to separate the device’s unveiling and its retail availability. This means that, the company might decide to announce the foldable model in September and make it available for customers in the coming months.
Foldable iPhone could be unveiled before it goes on sale
Among the reputable tipsters and industry insiders, reports have deliberately indicated a September 2026 launch for Apple’s first foldable iPhone. To recall, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that the foldable device was on track for next month’s release and will tag along with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Moreover, a report suggested Apple could follow a strategy similar to the iPhone X for the foldable model. To recap, the iPhone X was announced in September 2017, but it reached customers later due to production constraints. Following this claim, another renowned analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, went on to share that Apple’s foldable iPhone could face similarly limited initial availability, reportedly around 500,000 to 1 million units during the third quarter.
Anyhow, Apple has not officially confirmed the September event as of now. But reports have pointed to a September 9 launch event. Still, the date remains to be officially announced by the company.
Limited production could restrict global availability
According to the sources cited by Channel News, production volume is probably another constraint. Apple plans to manufacture around seven million foldable iPhones during the second half of 2026.
If the figure is accurate, it would put Apple’s foldable in a relatively limited initial production compared to iPhone models. Consequently, a constrained supply or shipment would make it harder for Apple to release the foldable iPhone at once across all major markets.
Apple Fold price could be significantly higher
Pricing is one of the reasons highlighted as an unresolved issue. After all, Apple is reportedly not expected to reveal the foldable iPhone’s price at the September 8 event.
Anyway, the device is likely to cost significantly more than Apple’s usual iPhone models due to the higher manufacturing cost, including displays, hinges, and other components.
In Australia, sources closer to Channel News have suggested a price as much as A$700 higher than Samsung’s Galaxy Fold8 series.
For comparison, the Galaxy Fold8 (256GB variant) is selling for A$2,699 at JB Hi-FI in Australia. So, Apple’s foldable could be positioned in that range or above, but the higher range would put it firmly in the premium category of the foldable industry.
