The first-generation Moto Z Play was known for its top-notch battery backup and was better than most of the smartphones out there in any price bracket. We were expecting that Moto will raise the bar further and will set another benchmark, but doesn’t seem to be happening with the upcoming Moto Z2 Play.
If the newer reports are to be believed, Moto is all set to compromise on the battery capacity of the phone for a slimmer chassis. At just 7mm, the Moto Z Play isn’t thick at all. In fact, most of us will go for a slightly thicker phone with a bigger battery instead of a razor-thin one that doesn’t last that long.
The news has been confirmed via a report published on VentureBeat by Evan Blass, or more popularly known as @evleaks on Twitter. The report says that the Moto Z2 Play will sport a 3000mAh battery, down from 3510mAh in its predecessor. Thereby reducing the maximum usage from 50 hours to just 30 hours.
We have already seen this battery capacity on another Moto phone – Moto G5 Plus – and we know that the results weren’t as impressive as the original Moto Z Play.
With the reduced battery capacity, Moto was able to bring the thickness down by one millimeter, and the phone’s weight has also been brought down by 20 grams. The trade-off will make the mid-range phone lose its most impressive feature and settle for a mediocre battery life.
Almost everything except the battery seems to be receiving an upgrade. As per the report, the phone will be powered by a Snapdragon 626 processor clocked at 2.2 GHz. The RAM capacity will also be increased to 4GB from the current 3GB, while the internal storage will be increased from 32Gb to 64GB.
For the camera, there will be a 12MP unit with a f/1.7 aperture on the back, against Moto Z Play’s 16MP f/2.0 camera. The display of the phone is said to remain the same as its predecessor to ensure Moto Mod’s compatibility with the newer Moto Z devices. It will come powered by Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box.
Motorola will launch the phone with other Moto Z phones and will be available in gray and gold color options.
