A couple of weeks back we had reported about Motorola India teasing a ‘smarterphone’ that was soon to be released in the country. It turns out that the phone is none other than the recently announced Moto Z2 Play proving all our expectations wrong.

Launched internationally just a couple of days back, the phone wasn’t expected to land in India this soon. Now that it already has, you must know that you will be able to pre-order it from 8th June, and if you do, there will be a bunch of freebies exclusively for the pre-booked units.

Motorola has created a separate website detailing all the pre-booking offers and the stores where you can pre-order the phone. Interestingly, there is no mention of any online store, and the pre-order is available only through the offline retail stores. But rest assured, the phone will be offered through both offline and online channels once launched. The pre-booking window is open until June 15.

For its specifications, the Moto Z2 Play is overall a great device but may not be able to appeal the customers as the original Moto Z Play did. While its internals have seen a bump, the battery capacity has gone down significantly, and the price has also been increased by a bit.

The phone has maintained its 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display with a new fingerprint scanner below it. There is a 12 MP camera on the back with dual pixel autofocus and a 5 MP front-facing one dual-LED flash. Moto Z2 Play is water-repellent and is powered by Snapdragon 626 processor.

There would be two variants – one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage and one with 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage. The phone has a reduced thickness of 5.99mm which also contributes to the reduction of its battery size to 3000mAh. The battery life was the strongest point of the Moto Z Play with its 3510mAh battery, and Motorola claims its successor will maintain the outstanding battery life.

For the pricing, Motorola announced that the 64GB variant would be priced at $499 (Rs. 32,100), a $50 (Rs. 3,200) increase from the launch price of the Moto Z Play. Taking advantage of local manufacturing, the Moto Z Play was priced lower than what it should have been according to the direct currency conversion using the then rates. We do expect the price of the phone in India to be higher than the Moto Z Play but should remain below the Rs. 30,000 mark.
