HMD Global, the new home of Nokia, may launch a new smartphone dubbed as Nokia 1. The device could be the most affordable smartphone from Nokia priced lower than even the Nokia 2 and it could be Nokia’s first Android Go Edition smartphone. It is expected that the phone will be launched in Russia in March 2018 carrying a price tag of 5,990 Rubles and will eventually go for sale in other countries as well during the first quarter of 2018.

According to a tweet by Eldar Murtazin, the Nokia 1 will sport a 720p HD display and it will have 1GB of RAM and 8GB internal storage. However, it is not confirmed yet whether they will go with an entry level MediaTek processor or something like the Snapdragon 425, or even lower. However, he tweeted out that the Nokia 1 will be priced at 5,990 Rubles or around Rs. 6,650.

Currently, the Nokia 2 with quite similar specs sell for Rs. 6,999 but Nokia may be aggressive with the pricing this time, as they need to re-enter the emerging and huge markets like India and make phones more affordable, the same goal with which Google came up with Android Go. Google has also officially confirmed that quite a large number of Android Oreo Go Edition smartphones will be launching in 2018. So, it is not a surprise at all if HMD Global comes up with Nokia 1.

The Android Oreo Go Edition is basically all Android, but with lightweight apps that can run smoothly on lower-end phones. All the Android Go running smartphones would come with zero bloatware and include only the OS, Google Apps, and Google Play Store. Also, the Android Oreo Go Edition is built on top of Android 8.1 Oreo and Google has also put efforts to cut the apps, minimize the resource hunger for various apps by introducing Google Go, Google Assistant, YouTube Go, etc.

Not just device manufacturers, but chipset makers like Qualcomm and MediaTek, the two main players in the smartphone industry, have announced that they will support the Android Oreo Go Edition smartphones. So, any of these would likely be powering the Nokia 1. Not just Nokia, but brands like Lava, Micromax, Intex will also launch Android Oreo Go Edition smartphones in early 2018.
