While the whole world has been under the influence of this Coronavirus outbreak as well as there has been an impact on business and lockdown all over the world, Apple is quietly doing its business. Also, the company has been making big plans for its future and revealing some of them in the last few months too.
For example, we saw the switch from Apple’s butterfly keyboard to its old-but-new Magic keyboard with the launch of MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Also, there are reports that Apple’s iPad Air will get a major redesign with a design language similar to the iPad Pro models.
But there has been a major change waiting to happen and if Bloomberg’s report is to be believed, which is rarely inaccurate, we are going to see it announced really soon. Apple is going to make a huge announcement which is regarding an under-the-hood development for Mac which is that it will no longer use Intel chips on its laptops any longer.
As per the report, people familiar with the matter have said that Apple will announce the shift to its own chips on their laptops at the WWDC 2020 which to be noted is an online-only event for this year which most developers can attend. Now, we believe that the company will not switch its entire fleet of Macbook devices to Arm-based chips made in-house but they will try this out with either the Macbook Air or the 12-inch Macbook making a comeback.
Because we believe that it is a big risk for Apple switching its entire lineup to own chips which might be great in battery and have a 5nm process with extra cores compared to Intel but might lack in raw performance.
Apple’s WWDC 2020 is going to take place from June 22 and there will be a keynote same as previous years on the opening day where we are likely to hear more about this switch. It is unlikely that Apple will launch any new Mac with its own chip but plans are most likely to be revealed with the launch taking place next year. Also, the report mentions that future Mac devices will still run macOS rather than iOS or iPadOS meaning that future of macOS is in safe hands right now.
Bloomberg’s report goes on to mention that this project will be “codenamed Kalamata” and it will be announced “at the event” in order to “give outside developers time to adjust before new Macs roll out in 2021. This is essential because macOS apps that have been developed based on Intel chips need to adopt to Arm chips and developers will need to make two different versions of their apps going forward.
