Last year, people were talking a lot about the Asus Zenfone 6 series and this was not because of the pricing or the specifications that they offered but for one main reason which was a flipping camera module. The Zenfone 6 had a flipping dual camera which could be used as the rear primary camera but also be flipped in front to use as a selfie camera.
The other hidden advantage of this module was that the front looked almost bezel-less with tiny borders all around. Now, the Taiwanese giant is back with another launch and this time they have the Zenfone 7 series which comes with two devices, Zenfone 7 and Zenfone 7 Pro.
Interestingly and thankfully, Asus has decided to retain their USP flipping camera module and have upgraded it to a triple camera setup instead of a dual one. On top of that, minor blips from last year’s Asus Zenfone 6 have also been corrected. These were the IPS panel instead of an OLED one as well as refresh rate capped at 60Hz. This year’s Zenfone 7 series devices come with an OLED panel as well as 90Hz refresh rate.
But to be honest, the Zenfone 6 series started at $500 so there was not a huge lot to complain about too. This year’s Zenfone 7 series have bumped up prices because of the upgrades that we have mentioned. As for the camera, the triple camera module has a 64MP primary, 12MP ultrawide and an 8MP telephoto lens. As mentioned earlier, this module will be used on front and back so you get telephoto and ultrawide features for selfies too.
The difference between Zenfone 7 and the Zenfone 7 Pro is that the former has a Snapdragon 865 chip while the latter has a Snapdragon 865+ SoC. Also, there is no optical image stabilization on the Zenfone 7 whereas there is on the Zenfone 7 Pro.
Coming to the price, there is a significant bump up in starting prices compared to last year as the Zenfone 7 starts at close to US$749 since its Taiwan pricing is NT$21,990. As for the Zenfone 7 Pro, it costs nearly US$955 as its Taiwanese pricing is NT$27,990.
At the moment, Asus has not brought both these devices to North America but they will launch the devices in European markets on September 1. For the rest of the markets, we don’t have any details yet which could be announced in the coming weeks.
