Google is finally on its way to rejoin the Internet of Things platform wars. A few days ago at the Google I/O conference, they announced Brillo, the “underlying operating system for the internet of things”. Google also announced that a Developer preview of Brillo is coming later this year, in Q3 to be exact. Brillo is based on Android and polished to make it usable for lower power levels. Brillo supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy and other Android things.
Additionally to Brillo there’s Weave, the (Cross-platform) common language that will let Brillo devices, phones, and the internet talk to each other, Weave will arrive in Q4 later this year. Android devices will auto-detect Brillo and Weave devices. Here is a helpful chart to explain the whole situation:
Until now Google stayed relatively quiet on its smart home / IoT plans, especially since the company acquired Nest early last year. The name Brillo was mentioned in lasts week report from The Intercept, the report stated that Google is developing software that can run on very low-powered devices and communicate with other connected devices nearby.
