Right now, using Instagram on an iPad is… less than ideal. The only official option is to download the iPhone version of the app, which simply scales up to fill the iPad’s screen. That means blurry visuals, awkward navigation, and no real optimization for multitasking or landscape use.
Though the web app on Instagram has gotten better over time and features such as Stage Manager provide a somewhat improved multitasking experience, it is still far from what people want. Why now? TikTok, tariffs, and timing
So, what’s changed? Why is Meta finally considering building an iPad version of Instagram after years of saying it wasn’t a priority?
According to The Information, the sudden shift might have something to do with the uncertain future of TikTok in the U.S. With lawmakers pushing a “divest or ban” bill and increasing pressure on TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, Meta could be seizing the opportunity to strengthen its own position in the short-form video market, particularly Reels.
If TikTok becomes less accessible or even banned, millions of users, including creators, might look for a new home. Optimizing Instagram for as many devices as possible, including the iPad, could make Meta’s app a more attractive option.
Adam Mosseri’s past resistance
Instagram head Adam Mosseri has publicly addressed the lack of an iPad app multiple times. Back in February 2022, he responded to tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, saying, “It’s still just not a big enough group of people to be a priority.”
Even in 2023, Mosseri doubled down: “Not working on it right now. I think it’s a good thing to do at some point. But we have only so many people working at Instagram, so we’ve got to pick the most important things to do to improve Instagram at any given moment. And right now, it’s not quite making the cut.”
