- Instagram officially launches the long-awaited repost feature, letting users easily reshare public posts and Reels directly to their followers' feeds.
- A new Reposts tab is added to user profiles, giving reshared content its own space while still crediting the original creators.
- Alongside the repost update, Instagram introduces location-sharing maps and a Friends tab in Reels to encourage real social interaction.
Alright, so Instagram is finally giving us a feature people have been asking for forever. The Instagram repost feature is now official, and it started rolling out globally on August 6, 2025. If you’ve ever wanted to share someone else’s post without taking a screenshot or using some sketchy third-party app, this one’s for you.
Instagram Repost feature rolls out globally
How the Instagram Repost feature works
It’s pretty simple. If you see a public post or Reel you want to share, you can now hit the new repost button. Once you do, that post gets added to your followers’ feeds and also shows up in a new tab on your profile called Reposts.
You can write your own caption when you share, but the original creator always gets credit. That means the person who made the content still benefits, which is good if you’re someone who posts regularly and wants your stuff to reach more people.
For creators and brands, this is a big deal. It makes sharing way easier, and it could help a lot of content go viral faster without extra effort. Also, it’s more natural than the old workarounds.
Additional features: Interactive maps and Friends tab
New social features: map sharing and friends tab
But that’s not the only update. Instagram also added a couple more things with this rollout.
First, there’s a new interactive map. You can share your location with friends, see nearby events, popular spots, and explore what’s happening around you. It’s opt-in, so if you don’t want to share where you are, you don’t have to. You’ve got full control over it.
Then, there’s a new Friends tab in Reels. This one shows you what your close friends are liking, commenting on, and reposting. The goal here is to bring people closer, maybe spark more convos, or just let you keep up with what your friends are into.
Why Instagram is doing this
To be honest, Instagram wants people to interact more. During a recent Meta antitrust trial, some internal data came out saying only around 7% of user activity was with their actual friends’ content. That’s low for a social app.
So now, with the Instagram repost feature and these other tools, they’re clearly trying to make things feel more social again. More friends, less randomness. At least that’s the idea.
But yeah, some people are already saying Instagram is just copying other apps again. Like, Stories came from Snapchat. Reels came after TikTok. And now reposts feel kinda like retweets from X. So yeah, not the most original move. But still, it’s a useful feature, and it’s finally here.
So yeah, the Instagram repost feature is live, and it’s actually useful. It saves time, it’s clean, and it keeps things native inside the app. Add in the location sharing and Friends tab, and you can see Instagram trying to be more about actual people again.
Whether that works or not, we’ll have to wait and see. But for now, at least we finally got a proper repost button. Took long enough.
