Apple unveils iPhone 17 series at “Awe Dropping” event

At the “Awe-dropping” event on September 9, Apple marked the iPhone 17 series launch, which includes four models, the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The new series feature major upgrades in camera technology, performance, and durability. The release date for the iPhone 17 series is set for September 19, 2025, with pre-orders beginning September 12.

iPhone 17: Center Stage camera and all-day performance

The standard iPhone 17 comes with Apple’s new Center Stage front camera, which is designed to improve selfies, group photos, and video calls. The phone has a 48MP Fusion Main camera with 2x telephoto zoom and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera for macro and landscape photography.

The iPhone 17 features a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, which makes scrolling, gaming, and video playback smoother. Apple also introduced Ceramic Shield 2, which it claims is three times more scratch-resistant than its previous version and reduces glare when used outside.

The iPhone 17 is powered by the A19 chip, which gives it faster performance, better energy efficiency, and supports on-device AI features in iOS 26. Apple says the phone’s battery can last for up to 30 hours of video playback and can charge to 50% in just 20 minutes with the new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter.

The iPhone 17 will be available with 256GB and 512GB of storage. It will be priced starting at $799 (₹82,900) and will come in five colors, lavender, mist blue, sage, black, and white.

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: New design and pro-level cameras

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max feature a new brushed aluminum unibody with a vapor chamber cooling system to manage heat and improve performance. Both are powered by the A19 Pro chip, which Apple states is its most advanced processor yet, with up to 40% better sustained performance than the previous generation.

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max have a new triple 48MP Fusion camera system with a new telephoto lens that has up to 8x optical zoom, which is the longest ever on an iPhone. According to Apple, this setup provides the functions of eight professional lenses in one device. The updated 18MP Center Stage front camera also improves selfies and 4K HDR video recording.

For filmmakers and creators, the iPhone 17 Pro now supports ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and genlock. These features make the device more compatible with professional video production workflows.

The Pro models also introduce Ceramic Shield 2 on both the front and back, which provides increased resistance to cracks and scratches. The displays come in 6.3-inch (Pro) and 6.9-inch (Pro Max) sizes. Both feature ProMotion 120Hz refresh rates, an Always-On Display, and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits.

Connectivity, iOS 26, and eSIM

All models in the iPhone 17 series support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, powered by Apple’s new N1 networking chip. Apple is continuing its eSIM-only expansion, with models available in countries such as the U.S., Canada, Japan, and the UAE. The eSIM design enables slimmer devices, better security, and additional space for larger batteries.

The new phones will ship with iOS 26, which includes Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI features. This includes on-device translation, real-time transcription, and visual intelligence tools.

Sustainability and accessories

In line with Apple’s “Apple 2030” environmental pledge, the iPhone 17 series uses more recycled materials. The battery contains 100% recycled cobalt, and the enclosure uses 85% recycled aluminum. The packaging is also 100% fiber-based and recyclable.

Apple has also released a new line of accessories for the iPhone 17 series, including new MagSafe clear and silicone cases. They are also offering a cross-body strap made from recycled yarn that is available in a variety of colors.
