Highlights
  • Apple iPhone Fold is slated to arrive with a titanium and aluminum combo in its frame.
  • This would make iPhone Fold durable and lighter than using stainless steel altogether.
  • It is rumored to arrive sometime next year although Apple has kept mum on its development so far.

Next year is going to be epic as the first-ever iPhone Fold is expected to debut. Turns out the phone will use a combination of both aluminum and titanium in its frame, and here’s what all the latest buzz is all about.

Upcoming iPhone Fold moves away from stainless steel to a titanium/aluminum frame

iPhone Fold is speculated to arrive next year, and according to a new investor note by Apple analyst Jeff Pu, the phone will use both titanium and aluminum in its frame construction. For the unversed, iPhone Pro models have been using various materials for their frames over the years, from stainless steel to titanium, and then switched to aluminum on the recent iPhone 17 Pro/Max.

This comes amid a previous claim by Ming-Chi Kuo, according to whom, the Fold was earlier touted to use titanium on its frame, followed by a combination of both titanium and aluminum for its durable hinges. A move to mixing two elements in the frame comes out of nowhere, which begs whether Apple had originally decided to use both the components or something changed over time.

According to AppleInsider, the titanium used in the hinges will apply Liquid Metal, a technique wherein the material is fabricated using die casting. Having a durable hinge is important since it is what keeps your phone folded (or unfolded), and any issues with it can render a foldable phone useless.

Stainless steel for the hinges could have been a better option in that regard; however, it adds a lot of weight, probably that’s why titanium and/or aluminum were roped in for a delicate part of a foldable device.

Unfortunately, nothing much is known about the upcoming iPhone Fold in terms of specs. We are expecting the Fold to arrive with a 5.5” cover and a 7.8” folding display, based on previous rumors. There’s no Face ID, and instead, users will get Touch ID for biometrics. Watch out for this space as we bring more coverage to the iPhone Fold as it readies itself for the launch sometime next year.
