Apple has introduced a new feature on-board iOS 27 that makes switching between two iPhones easier. Dubbed “iPhone Handoff,” the feature lets users switch between two iPhones (as said) connected to the same phone number on each of these devices. More on the feature in this story.

iPhone Handoff in iOS 27 enables number sharing across two iPhones

We are literally a few days away from the Apple event where we will see iOS 27 go public along with the iPhone 18 Pro series. One of the features that were discussed during WWDC 2026 in June 2026 was “iPhone Handoff,” although the Cupertino giant refrained from sharing any more information.

Cut to now, the folks at MacRumors got their hands on the feature running on Xcode 27’s Device Hub. The video shared earlier on Thursday demonstrates how iPhone Handoff lets users set up two iPhones using the same phone number. More precisely, these iPhones will be using eSIMs, where one iPhone is tagged as ‘Main’ while another is a ‘Companion’ device.

The feature allows users to seamlessly switch between two iPhones, back and forth, deployed with the same number. Of course, the primary or main iPhone gets all the admin access and cellular settings while the companion device follows suit. From what we could gather, the feature allows users to switch between iPhones based on which phone is unlocked. There will be a clear indication on the Dynamic Island when switching between devices.

Moreover, it seems that iPhone Handoff as a feature will only work on phones with carrier support. Deutsche Telekom in Germany and T-Mobile in the US are among the first takers.

Apple’s Surprise and Shine event is happening on September 9. This is where we will get our hands on a handful of products, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Ultra, Watch Ultra 4, Watch Series 12, and the aforementioned iOS 27 and other iterations.
