MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro SoC launches, fabbed on a 2nm process

MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro has been officially unveiled as the company’s first-ever 2nm chipset and the first to use ARM’s CPU and GPU cores. It happens to be the third 2nm chipset out there after Samsung Exynos 2600 and Apple A20 Pro, and it brings notable upgrades in performance and paves the way forward with superior AI compute. Dimensity 9600 Pro is official, based on a 2nm node, with noticeable performance upgrades.
The latest Dimensity 9600 Pro SoC brings a lot to the table. For starters, it is fabbed on a 2nm node from TSMC, which is better than last year’s 3nm Dimensity 9500 SoC.

Specs-wise, the CPU on-board the D9600 Pro uses two Ultra-class ARM C2-Ultra CPU cores clocked at 4.55GHz; plus 3x C2-Pro cores clocked at 4.35GHz; and 3x C2-Pro cores clocked at 3.1GHz. There’s a 21% larger L2 cache but a similar 16MB L3 cache and 10MB system-level cache, and this contraption gives the CPU a 17% boost in single-core performance plus a 15% faster multi-core performance.

The power efficiency is 61% better than the predecessor in multi-threaded tasks. However, I would take these numbers with a pinch of salt, as these were discussed at the unveiling and the real-life parameters can be different.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro SoC is expected to carry cores clocked at 5GHz, although the actual sustained performance and other comparisons can only be made once both the chipsets are pitted against each other post-launch.

The Dimensity 9600 Pro brings a Mali-G2 Ultra NX with 185+ fps gaming. All this can deliver peak performance that is 27% higher, 18% faster ray tracing, and an improved power efficiency by 24%. The chipset supports both LPDDR5X and LPDDR6 RAM plus UFS 5.0 storage.

There’s a MediaTek NPU 1090 on-board that outruns the Dimensity 9500 SoC by a great margin. Apart from that, the Dimensity 9600 Pro supports an ISP tapping into the NPU for video and photo processing and sensor coverage of up to 200MP and 8K at 60fps video recording. 

The MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro SoC brings on-board a Wi-Fi 7 (be) tri-band with up to 7.3GHz frequency, Bluetooth v6.2, up to WQHD+ 180Hz display support, and GPS/Galileo/BeiDou/Glonass support built-in.
