After the characters news of last week with Apple’s Messaging app, we saw that Skype also doesn’t like certain strings of characters. The problem with Skype is caused by a string of just 8 characters, and a fix for the problem is far from easy.
What is more concerning about the problem with Skype, is that unlike with the problem at the Apple messaging app, it isn’t a completely random string of characters, it is actually just: “http://:”. And, this can be typed incidentally when you’re sending a URL.
When you receive those characters, Skype will crash instantly, and it will go on every time you try to re-open the app. Windows, Android and iOS are the system that have the problem, which leaves the Mac and touch based Windows 8.1 app users unscathed.
If it happens that you receive those characters in Skype, fixing it won’t be easy. Trying to uninstall and install Skype again won’t help, as Skype saves the messages in the cloud and re-downloads them if you login at your account.
The only solution for the problem now is to ask the sender to remove the string of characters and reinstall the app after that.
The good news is, that people aren’t able to send those messages anymore. And, Skype is aware of the problem and is working on a solution for everyone.
