Netflix is one of the best video streaming services in India and evidently, the most expensive when compared to rivals like Amazon Prime Video, ZEE5, Hotstar, etc. However, similar to a few other countries, Netflix is testing out a mobile-only subscription in India where users can try out the new mobile-only monthly subscription package.

According to the report published by Economic Times, Netflix will charge 250/mo for its mobile-only subscription which is actually half of what it offers Netflix with an entry-level plan worth 500/mo in India as of now. Note that Netflix subscription plans are directly converted into Indian rupees from US dollars which is what makes it expensive while other video streaming services have tweaked the plans based on the Indian audience.

To discuss further, the mobile-only plan would allow subscribers to watch Netflix content in standard definition (SD) on a single mobile device at a time. Note that currently, Netflix offers an SD plan for a single screen is 500/mo while an HD plan for two devices is 650/mo and finally, a premium plan with HD for 4 screens is worth 800/mo.

We did a little digging and found that Netflix India has already released the mobile-only plan worth 250/mo to all. However, to put things into perspective, it is still expensive than other video streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video offers a monthly subscription at 129/mo, Hotstar has a plan starting as little as 199/mo while ZEE5 is offering at 99/mo and so on.

Netflix followed a similar stride in a few other countries such as Malaysia last year where it ran trails similar to this as well. Now that 4G networks in India are getting high-speed and widely available, a mobile-only plan seems viable and effective since there are more Indians with mobile phones than those with a desktop or laptop at disposal.

Also, Netflix offers one of the best content when compared to a slew of video streaming services that makes it a lucrative deal to pick up. Netflix believes that the move will allow its subscriptions to switch to a more affordable plan while achieving its goal to attract more subscribers on its platform.

Netflix is working with Indian entertainment companies to produce a Netflix series tailored in Hindi and other languages. It has already commissioned 12 original films and 12 original series in local languages and has put an emphasis towards producing the same for the India market.
