- Samsung is probably working on it's first-ever tri-fold smartphone dubbed as Galaxy G Fold.
- It was spotted in animations on OneUI 8 codes suggesting a tri-fold mechanism.
- Unlike Mate XT, the phone uses a different folding mechanism that protects the inner folding display although the design is yet to be finalized.
Samsung seems to be upping its game in the foldable devices with the Samsung Galaxy G Fold. Turns out animations hidden in the One UI 8 code reveal what we could see as Samsung’s next-gen tri-fold device, possibly rivaling Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design. We’ve got more details about the device right here that will surely intrigue your curiosity.
Samsung Galaxy G Fold — Its First-ever Tri-Fold Smartphone
According to the folks at Android Authority, who uncovered the hidden animations in One UI 8, the South Korean giant is working on a tri-fold smartphone named Galaxy G Fold. It is currently being referred to as Multifold 7, although it seems more of an internal moniker.
A Tri-fold that Folds Differently
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is all set for its debut at Unpacked 2025 on July 9, and it is a single inward folding mechanism with a giant inner and a cover display. However, the speculated Samsung Galaxy G Fold will have a tri-fold design where it has a giant inner foldable display proportioned in three halves, followed by a cover display.
Unlike Mate XT — the first commercially available tri-fold smartphone, Samsung Galaxy G Fold sports a cover display at the back, which becomes the primary display when the phone is folded. It is right in the middle, which means the G Fold won’t have a Z-shaped folding mechanism like the Mate XT.
Instead, the phone is divided into three panels connected to two unique sets of hinges. The animations suggest we could see both right and left parts fold inwards, hiding the entire inner display. Flip the phone, and now, you have the cover display to interact with. Do note that the animations also warn users not to fold the right-hand panel first, as the rear camera setup will prevent it from happening. You need to fold the left-hand panel first, followed by the right-hand panel.

Although Mate XT’s tri-fold mechanism is much easier to comprehend, it had one major flaw — folding the phone would leave a section of the foldable display exposed to elements. In the case of Samsung, the South Korean giant might pull off something interesting by hiding the inner display, providing a standard cover display for usage when the phone is folded.
It is perhaps important to understand that we are still way ahead of its purported launch. Samsung could be working on multiple designs at once, and this could be one of them. We don’t have much information about the Galaxy G Fold, although we might find something at the Unpacked event happening next week.
