Highlights
  • OnePlus 16 is getting ready for a big launch in a few weeks.
  • The flagship phone will bring a custom-made display material promising higher refresh rate and better performance.
  • OnePlus 16 will bring a uniform 1mm thick bezels on-board on its display, a much slimmer outlook than OnePlus 15's 1.15mm bezels.

The leaks surrounding the OnePlus 16 display are getting out of hand. Turns out the upcoming flagship will bring significant upgrades as it is being developed using a custom material and with a new circuit design. All these upgrades promise a higher refresh rate, slimmer bezels, enhanced durability, and overall smoother performance, to name a few.

OnePlus 16 display to carry a custom material

First things first, the OnePlus 16 is expected to arrive either in September or October this year. The Chinese smartphone giant is working with display maker BOE to develop X4 light-emitting material that will be used on top of OP16. What this new material promises is low power consumption, improved efficiency, and double the lifespan of previous-generation displays.

However, that’s just like scratching the surface. The OnePlus 16 display promises smoother performance thanks to higher refresh rates starting at 185Hz as per the engineering samples quoted by tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS). A longer lifespan ensures your OP16 and its display stay strong, retain display quality, and maintain consistent brightness for a longer duration. This is imperative, as many would otherwise believe that OnePlus uses inferior quality materials on its display and thus, the various issues including green lines, flickering, etc.

Moving further, the alleged X4 material also brings an updated circuit design pushing the envelope of high-performance display technologies, including additional smoothness. DCS further mentions how the new display will bring higher peak brightness, better resolution, and a higher refresh rate, to name a few, although without actually specifying the specs on-board.

OnePlus 16 display is taking a new low of ~1mm

Ultra-thin bezels were a thing a few years ago. Soon, other technologies took over, and bezels became a second thought for many. The OnePlus 15 got its four-sided uniform bezels at 1.15mm each, the slimmest on-board a OnePlus phone to date. Cut to now, the Chinese giant is expected to leap further, introducing the OnePlus 16 with thinner bezels measuring less than 1mm uniformly on all four sides.

Although we are talking about just 0.15mm of discount on the bezels, the reality is that the process takes sophisticated engineering, advanced screen packaging technologies, and the ability to ensure stronger structural integrity in order to achieve such a feat. Having thin bezels ensures your phone packs in a higher screen real estate without increasing the size of the device itself, although it also comes with potential price hikes.

We are not certain about the OnePlus 16 pricing yet, although I am expecting a bit of a hike given the advanced display and the ever-increasing cost of memory chips that have been choking the industry in a chokehold. Keep a tab on the OnePlus 16 as we bring the latest about the phone as it prepares to launch in a few weeks.
