The ongoing feud between the US and China has forced many companies to look for alternatives. Oppo expressed that it has started working on an in-house chipset for a few months now with a trademarked filled back in February. Apparently, Oppo is accelerating its plan towards developing and producing its own chipset starting with talent acquisition.

It was earlier reported that Oppo hired top executives from Speedtrum and MediaTek to give its chipset-making business a boost. MediaTek is currently the second-largest chipmaker in the world and the biggest chipmaker for Oppo apart from Qualcomm. However, due to the ongoing US-China trade war and the various restrictions the US government has put on companies in the US and China, the best plan of action is to produce an in-house chipset.

The US government recently restricted TSMC from producing HiSilicon Kirin chipsets for Huawei. This is why Huawei has moved its chipset production to SMIC. Even Google is working on a custom chip for its Pixel lineup. In fact, the top three smartphone manufacturers have their custom-designed chipset.

This is why Oppo decided to work on its custom chipset to put away from relying on Qualcomm and others. Oppo has already hired Jeffery Jones, the co-CEO at MediaTek as well as other bigwigs from various chipmaking firms in an attempt to work on its full-fledged chipset that will be housed in Oppo smartphones. Additionally, Oppo could use the chipsets in its sub-brand Realme as well as sister company OnePlus although we are yet to be confirmed.

Oppo is currently targeting the European market where Huawei has a sizable market share and has partnered with Vodafone there. It is one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world that rolls out new smartphones every month or less. It’s Oppo Reno 4 series is currently in the making. Check out all the stories on Oppo, its chipset, and more on True-Tech.
