Oppo has finally unveiled the first ever under-screen camera for selfies, which was teased previously by both Oppo as well as Xiaomi. Oppo has also revealed that this technology will come to the commercial phones “in the near future”. Previously, we saw the in-display fingerprint sensor technology being launched which means that the physical fingerprint scanners are being removed from smartphones. Now, the selfie cameras will not be visible from the outside as the front cameras will be placed inside the display. The Oppo Under-screen Camera (USC) was finally unveiled at the MWC 2019 in Shanghai which is a version of Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona every year. The company has posted this on Twitter with the caption that this is “Oppo’s brand new solution for full-screen display”

Going into the details regarding this new technology from Oppo, the company says that a custom transparent material is being used along with redesigned pixel structure. This is done so as to let the light enter the smartphone’s camera because it will be covered by the display. Also, the sensor on this under-screen camera is believed to be larger than a regular selfie camera. Also, this camera sensor also comes with a wide aperture so as to capture as much light as possible.
Oppo says that once the camera on the front is not being used, you can use the touchscreen as normal. Obviously, there will be concerns regarding fingerprints in that area and other factors but Oppo says there is nothing to worry about. At the same time, Oppo says that under-screen camera will have a significant reduction in photo quality.
Because there will be problems like haze, glare and colour cast. Regarding plans to reveal put this technology in smartphones, Oppo says that they will launch a device with an under-screen camera “in the near future”. Although, Oppo does acknowledge the fact that at least the first batch of smartphones with an under-screen camera will not have the best image quality.
