- Google may launch two new Pixel 9 models: Pixel 9 Pro XL and 9 Pro Fold.
- The 9 Pro Fold may feature Tensor G4 chip and merge with the main Pixel lineup.
- Questions linger about its name, release date, and Google's foldable strategy.
Instead of launching just one new Pixel 9 flagship model, the dual-phone release pattern will be disrupted by the arrival of two Pixel 9 series smartphones. As per Android Authority’s recent reports, Google probably will bring the Pixel 9 Pro Fold as the fourth addition to the 2024 lineup, along with the third model that has a suspiciously large display and is probably named the Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Google’s Pixel Lineup Expands with a Foldable: Hello Pixel 9 Pro Fold?
As per the report, here are the device names and their codenames:
- Pixel 9 (also called “tokay”)
- Pixel 9 Pro under the working name “Caiman”
- The Pixel 9 Pro XL is another name for the Venom or “Komodo”.
- PXL 9 Pro FOLD (also known as “the comet”) is coded.
Google’s recent software builds for 2024 also confirm the codenames above.
According to AndroidAuthority, Google continued to refer to the device as Pixel Fold 2, interestingly pivoting to “comet” as the codename. Which implies, that the “Pixel 9 Pro Fold” name might not be set in stone either, and may change close to release.
When Google came with Pixel Fold in 2023 it was derided for launching out of cycle and being an outlier of the flagship lineup. The fact that it relies on the Tensor G2 chip, which was long suspected to be less sophisticated than the Tensor G3 in the Pixel 8 series, released later, also raises concerns. Also, it is only three years of software updates, less than Pixel’s 8 series, which is promised for Pixel Fold.
An indication that Google is going to turn the Pixel 9 Pro Fold into a showpiece model. As the report suggests, the device won’t have the distinctive design of its predecessor, but instead, it will have Tensor G4 chip with other Pixel 9 models.
