Back in November, Samsung unveiled its first-ever foldable phone ‘Galaxy Fold’ at SDC 2018 followed by an official showcase at the Unpacked event in February this year. It has since allowed a handful of the media representatives to check out its upcoming Galaxy Fold slated for launch in Shanghai on April 24 followed by in Hong Kong on April 26, however, the launch date has been postponed.
While Samsung posted videos stating the durability of its folding mechanism and the flexible display, there have been instances where users who were offered test units to try it out, have reported certain abnormalities and damages. To put things into context, media representatives including some high-end tech Youtubers have reported the fact that there is a crease that runs right between the screen which is visible when the screen is off.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Apparently, Samsung Galaxy Fold is delicate and removing a screen protector that comes built-in has proven to be a damaging factor where the units have seen damages such as scratches while some units have reported blacking out one side of the display or both as a whole.
The recent update could be a result of its failed marketing campaign where the idea of handing over units to media representatives has already backfired. Samsung has postponed training retail employees in some regions as well which could hint an overall delay in its launch globally. Samsung made an official statement that it will thoroughly inspect units and posts warning signs on packaging as well so be extra cautious about the damage that the foldable screen has been exhibiting.
Note that not all units have encountered similar issues since a unit with GSMArena works just fine according to its report. While The Verge added that the unit it got for testing failed after debris stuck between the hinge and the display.
Samsung has been developing its foldable phone for quite a while now. The Samsung Galaxy Fold markets at a price tag of whopping $1,980 which is a lot even with a tech new to people while its competitor Huawei is also rolling its own foldable Huawei Mate X which is priced at extravagantly $2,600 although we haven’t heard about any failure with the latter as of now as the units aren’t available yet.
