Foldable phones have always seemed a far-fetched dream, but they might become a reality soon. Maybe as soon as early next year. Samsung has been expected to come out with one for years now. While the company has invested so many years in its development, the foldable phone is now ready to be mass produced. Some reports have surfaced that suggest Samsung might start its production this year itself.

The report comes from Korea’s very own ET News that has got the confirmation from its sources about the matter. As per the report, Samsung will be starting to work on the final design of its foldable phone starting this March while the actual display will be manufactured in September this year. The final assembly of the phone shall start sometime in November, which falls in line with its tentative announcement date of early 2019.

It is worth noting that not Samsung, but Lenovo has already become the first company to showcase a foldable phone. It was back in 2016 when the company revealed its phone with a foldable display. In the folded state, the phone has a display on both the front and back for being easily used as a phone. It can be unfolded to become a tablet with double the screen area. Below is a video of that concept phone called Lenovo Folio.

Samsung is also expected to go by this approach for its foldable smartphone. According to the report, Samsung’s phone will be coming with a 7.3-inch flexible OLED and apart from this, no other information about the phone’s specifications is available at the moment. Samsung Display will obviously be responsible for manufacturing the foldable display of this ambitious phone.

We have seen Samsung slowly transition towards the flexible displays with the inclusion of folded display on its Edge branded smartphones. The Edge soon became a variant of its flagship lineup while Samsung’s entire last flagship lineup has now opted for the folded display on both the edges. But they aren’t foldable as they remain in their position and can’t be moved by the user. The upcoming foldable phone is expected to take this approach to the next level.
