After a well-received global launch, In New Delhi, India, Vivo today brings this phone to the second largest smartphone market in the world, with an under display fingerprint reader. Succeeding the experimental X20 Plus UD, the Vivo X21 (or the X21 UD as known in other parts of the world) brings under display fingerprint reader to the mass market, turning it into the very first commercially available phone featuring it.

The Vivo X21 features a 6.28-inch Super AMOLED FHD+ screen with an aspect ratio of 19:9, and crushing bezels wherever possible (with a notch on the top of the screen). It follows the design footprint of Oppo R15 and the OnePlus 6, being sister companies under BBK Electronics. While the notch enables brands to expand the display real estate, it also, for a few fans, embarks a sense of unoriginality, as it seems directly borrowed from the iPhone X. Nonetheless, at the time, it is the sole recourse to crunch the bezels.

Specifications, Software and Internals

On the internals, the phone features a Snapdragon 660, either 6GB RAM coupled with 128GB of flash internal storage. The device will run on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo-based on FunTouch OS, and will officially support face unlock, and the unique under-the-display fingerprint reader. The phone also consists of AI features powered by the Qualcomm chipset present inside. The phone sports an adequate 3,200mAh battery, with Vivo’s 18-Watt fast charging. On the audio end, the company has especially paid attention to the audio department considering the phone will also incorporate an AK4376A Hi-Fi chip for a better audio listening experience.

The Vivo X21’s support for facial recognition is solely software limited, howbeit, it is empowered by Jovi, and AI-driver virtual assistant by Vivo. Talking about the design end, the phone is a 3D glass sandwich, and features a dual-camera setup with a 12-megapixel  F/1.8 primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The primary sensor also features a dual-pixel technology. And on the front, the Vivo X21 packs a 12-megapixel selfie camera, equipped with the brand’s own Rubik’s Cube technology, and several AI oriented features like AI-HDR (better dynamic range) and AI-Face Beauty (works hand-in-hand with AI-HDR to enhance the photo to make you look better). Apart from all that, the Vivo X21 will bring to the table software features like Always-on display as well.

Pricing and Availability

Lastly, the Vivo X21 will be available in Ruby Red, Black, and Aurora White color variants globally, however, only the black variant makes it to India. The phone will retail exclusively through Flipkart at price tag of Rs. 35,990.
