  • WhatsApp View-Once Disappearing Message feature is now being tested for iPhone beta users with new timed chat controls.
  • Users can set messages to disappear automatically after 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 2 hours once they are read.
  • WhatsApp will also auto-delete unopened messages after 24 hours to improve privacy and reduce chat history storage.

WhatsApp is testing another privacy-focused feature, this time making temporary conversations more secure. After recently introducing timed chat options for Android beta users, the company has now begun testing the same functionality for iPhone users as well.

The new WhatsApp view-once disappearing message feature was first spotted in WhatsApp’s iOS beta version 26.19.10.72 by WABetaInfo, a platform known for tracking upcoming WhatsApp updates. The tool is designed to give users greater control over how long messages remain visible in chats, especially when sharing sensitive information.

A more practical version of View Once

This is not exactly the same as the older “View Once” option for photos and videos. This new version also works for normal text messages, which honestly makes it much more useful for private chats.

How WhatsApp view-once disappearing message feature works

Beta users who have access to the feature can enable it through the following:

Default message timer > Message timer > After reading

Once enabled, users can choose how long a message stays visible after it has been opened. The available options currently include:

  • 5 minutes
  • 1 hour
  • 2 hours

After the selected time runs out, the message automatically disappears from the chat.

WhatsApp is basically trying to make personal conversations feel more private. Some people send passwords, OTPs, account details, or personal info through chats, so this feature could actually help in those situations.

How the feature works

The interesting thing here is that WhatsApp handles the timer differently for both users in the chat. For the sender, the countdown starts immediately after the message is sent. So if someone sends a message at 10:00 AM with a 5-minute timer, the message disappears from their own phone at 10:05 AM no matter what.

For the receiver, the timer only starts after opening the message. If they read it at 10:10 AM, then the message gets deleted from their side at 10:15 AM.

There is also another small detail many people might miss. If the receiver never opens the chat at all, the message automatically removes itself after 24 hours. So the message will not stay there forever.

Release timeline remains unclear

Right now, the disappearing message feature is limited to a small group of beta users on iPhone and Android. WhatsApp still has not shared any official release date for stable users.

But usually when features reach this stage of beta testing, a wider rollout happens after some more testing and bug fixes. So there is a good chance more users will start getting it in the next few months.

Overall, WhatsApp has been adding more privacy features lately, and this update feels like another step in that direction. The new view-once disappearing message system gives users better control over chats without making things complicated. It is still in testing right now, but if WhatsApp keeps the feature simple and reliable, many users will probably end up using it daily for private conversations.
