With the recent launch of the Mi TV 4A in India, Xiaomi teased the arrival of a new smartphone, which was speculated to be the Redmi 5. The company had launched the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus in China a few weeks back and of these, the Redmi 5 Plus ended up launching here in India as the Redmi Note 5. The cheaper Redmi 5 might be launched in India soon and it could be Amazon.in exclusive.

Amazon has put up a banner on its homepage showing an image that Xiaomi’s global Vice President Manu Kumar Jain had shared yesterday on his Twitter account. The image bears a white contour of a smartphone with seemingly thinner bezels around its 18:9 display, that is very reminiscent of the Redmi 5, and is tagged with the hashtag #CompactPowerhouse. With his tweet, Jain has also confirmed that the phone will be announced on March 14.
The teaser banner on Amazon reveals that the phone will indeed be Amazon exclusive, but it doesn’t mention any date for its availability. No dedicated product page is live yet and clicking on the banner will take you to a page where you can subscribe to get launch and availability details. While Xiaomi may announce the Redmi 5 next week, the device will hopefully be available only after a few days via flash sales.
Xiaomi isn’t likely to make any major hardware changes to the Redmi 5 variant launching in India. Based on the previously available information from its launch in China, the handset sports a 5.7-inch display in 18:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1440 x 720. It is powered by the Snapdragon 450 processor and is available in two RAM and storage variants – 2GB + 16GB and 3GB + 32GB – which was priced at 799 CNY (~8,200 INR) and 899 CNY (~9,227 INR) in China, respectively. It has a rear-placed 12MP camera sensor and a battery of 3,300mah capacity.

Update
The product page on Amazon.in now has some additional details available with the number “5” getting a prominent spot in the two images (included below). This further reaffirms that Xiaomi will indeed be launching the Redmi 5, while the images suggest the phone to be slimmer and faster than the currently available products. Furthermore, the time 3 PM is mentioned along with the phones launch date of March 14. There are chances that the Redmi 5 will go on sale the same day of its launcher at the mentioned time.
