Canalys has released a preliminary report on smartphone shipments across the globe according to which the shipment grew by 12 percent in Q2 2021 during the COVID recovery phase. It has listed the top 5 smartphone brands along with their market share and growth percentage and Samsung has risen above it all once again. Apparently, Xiaomi is inching closer at the second position with a massive annual growth recorded as per Canalys.

Xiaomi’s shipment grew by 50 percent in Western Europe, 150 percent in Africa, and 300 percent in Latin America, says Ben Staton, Canalys Research Manager. Xiaomi has changed its approach in its business model from being a challenger to incumbent and it is perhaps clearly seen in the pricing of all of its smartphones which is 40 percent cheaper than Samsung and 75 percent cheaper than Apple as the company targets mass markets.

Xiaomi is working towards maximizing its sales on the high-end smartphones while competing against the likes of Oppo and Vivo where the latter two are ready to spend billions on marketing while Xiaomi would not. Also, all of these three companies have the same objectives and issues related to the shortage of component supply amid the global silicon shortage.

One of the factors that worked in Xiaomi’s favor is the demise of Huawei from the global market since it can no longer have access to Google Play Services due to the ongoing feud between Huawei and the U.S. Government.

When it comes to numbers, Samsung had a market share of 19 percent in Q2 2021 shipments with an annual growth of +15 percent. Xiaomi is inching closer to the second position, leaving Apple behind with a 17 percent market share and an 83 percent annual growth which is technically five times that of Samsung’s.

Moving on, we have Apple standing at third position as per Canalys with a market share of 14 percent with a +1 percent of annual growth. Next up, we have Oppo and Vivo both at 10 percent of market share with an annual growth of 28 percent and 27 percent respectively.
