Google has a tradition of naming the Android versions after a popular sweet. Like every year, this year too people suggested a lot of names for the upcoming Android 8.0 update. One of them seems to have been finalized by Google and if the reports are to be believed, the next Android version will be officially called Oreo.

There is not one but two sources confirming this news, one of them is Google itself. Android 8.0 is scheduled to release on August 23rd and it is natural for the company to tease the release. Google posted a video on Google Plus and the details were hidden in its file name. Upon evaluating, it was found that the file name of the video was “GoogleOreo_Teaser_0817_noDroids (1).mp4”. The video has since been removed by Google.

Besides this, the popular tipster Evan Blass also informed via a tweet that the Android 8.0 will indeed be called Oreo. He posted an image of the popular chocolate biscuit with a title that reads: “Happy Eclipse”. The title is in reference to the total solar eclipse that will happen on the same day Android 8.0 will be released.

The video posted by Google is quite an enough evidence to confirm the name Android Oreo. There are chances this could be a mistake by a Google employee but Blass has a solid past and he rarely makes mistakes in such matters.

Google had revealed a lot of details about the Android 8.0 during the Google I/O conference held earlier this year. The biggest change that the OS will bring is enhanced battery life by taking the Doze mode found in the previous versions a step forward. Apart from this, the Android 8.0 will bring better notification controls, app notification dots, picture-in-picture mode, adaptive icons, autofill to apps, and much more. The final set of details will be revealed when the OS is released in a couple of days.
