2015 Flagships – Are They Still Worth Buying?

With the reports that Google may not offer some of the features of Pixel phones to Nexus, the question arises in buyers mind “Is buying last year’s flagship a right decision? Companies concentrate on their current flagships and some choose to abandon their old ones. Here’s a list of last year’s flagships and whether you should buy them or not.

Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge

With the launch of S7 and S7 edge in February, Samsung’s sales skyrocketed. The phones came with a great camera, impressive design and increased the company’s profit.

Samsung slashed the prices of S6 and S6 edge when they launched their current flagships

The last year’s flagships offer good specs including a Quad HD AMOLED display, Exynos octa core processor and a whole lot of sensors. On the software side, the S6 siblings run on Android 6.0 with Samsung’s TouchWiz on top. The camera though good, is no match for the quality the current flagships offer. But at Rs.34,000/- for S6 and Rs.40,000/- for S6 edge the phones are still a good buy.

HTC One A9

When HTC launched the A9 last year, there was a debate whether it was a flagship phone or not. Though not officially a flagship, it was considered one by many. HTC was criticized for the design of the phone. Many critics believed that the phone was an Apple’s IPhone knockoff with some minor changes. Coming to the specs, the phone offers a 5-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels. The phone has a Snapdragon 617 processor and is available in two variants, one with 16 GB internal storage combined with 2 GB of RAM and another with 32 GB of storage and 3 GB of RAM. The phone comes on board with Android Marshmallow on the software front.

The phone is not for the future because of its small 2150 mAh battery (there is fast charging though)

The camera is nothing to write much about. The 13MP rear camera is average and lacks the ability to record videos in 4K. At INR 25,000/- you are better off looking elsewhere.

LG G4

LG may have completely upped their game with G5 but until last year, their phones, though good, were never among the best sellers.

This may be because LG was not considered among the top phone manufacturers in India.

G4 is a decent phone, with a Snapdragon 808 processor, a 3 GB RAM, and a quad HD 5.5-inch display with a whopping 538 ppi display density. The camera is great; it comes with a 16 MP rear and a 8 MP front shooter. If you are looking for a phone priced at Rs.30,000/-, the G4 is a decent choice.

Whenever Apple launches a new phone, A massive queue can be seen outside the Apple stores, just before the sales begin. Apple has a huge fan base, and their phones are almost always a success. Apple’s last year’s flagships were the same. They offered a powerful A9 Cortex chip, a great camera, and 3D touch.

Whenever Apple announces the prices of new IPhone, kidney jokes start appearing on social media due to their high pricing.

After the launch of IPhone 7 and the 7 Plus we witnessed a massive price drop on 6s and 6s Plus. Starting at INR 40,000 they are the phones where you can never go wrong.

OnePlus 2

OnePlus 2 created a lot of hype when it launched. The company promoted the phone with the tagline “2016 Flagship killer” which acted as an overhyped statement for the phone.

The phone offered what was expected of the company- An affordable flagship with great specs

The company delivered a solid phone with killer specs including Snapdragon 810 processor with 4GB Ram, 13 MP laser-guided camera and a fingerprint sensor. Though the company was criticized for the lack of NFC, Fast charging, and Quad HD screen, at 25,000 INR it was a real deal. The phone still holds its ground because of its good processor, also because it has a fast camera and runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow (with an update to 7.0 Nougat in the works). The phone is available for Rs.17,999/- for the 16 GB, 3GB Ram variant and Rs.19,999/- for the 64GB, 4GB Ram variant. At that price, the phone is still worth buying.
