Looks like the Japanese tech giant Sony is back from the hibernation mode with the launch of three new Sony Xperia smartphones today at CES 2018 in Las Vegas. Among the three smartphones, the Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra are mid rangers, maintaining the Xperia design aesthetics while the Xperia L2 is an entry-level phone that focuses on a new design.
Sony Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 ultra
In terms of design, they look like any other Xperia phones. However, the top and bottom bezels have been reduced and also the side bezels now look thinner. The rear panel has an aluminium finish with a 2.5D curved glass on the front and chamfered sides. Both the phones now have a fingerprint sensor on the back, under the camera module which is a major change as Sony is known for placing the fingerprint scanner on the right edge, embedded into the power button itself.
The XA2 has a 5.2-inch 1080p display, which is definitely an upgrade from last generation’s 5-inch 720p panel and in the case of the Xperia XA2 Ultra, the display measures at 6-inches while maintaining the same full HD resolution. While the XA2 comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage, along with hybrid SIM+microSD slot, the XA2 Ultra comes with 4GB RAM and 32GB or 64GB storage variants along with a dedicated microSD slot.
The Xperia XA2 now has a 3300mAh non-removable battery, while the XA2 Ultra has a 3580mAh battery and both of these devices support Quick Charge 3.0. Both of these mid-rangers run Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box with Sony’s lightweight skin on top. In terms of connectivity, they have LTE, USB Type-C; Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.
Sony Xperia L2
The Xperia L2 seems to be a successor to the Xperia E Series. The Xperia L2 comes with a 5.5-inch 720p display . It is still powered by the MediaTek MT6737T processor, coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. However, the Xperia L2 also comes with a dedicated microSD slot for memory expansion. In terms of camera, the Xperia L2 has a 13MP rear camera and on the front, it has got the same 8MP ultra-wide camera like the Xperia XA2.
In terms of battery, the phone packs a 3,300mAh battery which should work fine, considering the lower resolution display it has got. Just like the XA2 and XA2 Ultra, it has got a fingerprint reader on the back. In terms of OS, the phone will run Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box, with Sony’s own skin on top. Connectivity options include LTE, USB-C, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, GPS, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.2.
