  • Apple is likely working on a 200MP iPhone camera for 2028.
  • This is perhaps one of the many changes we will see over the course of three years that should giving Apple an edge over its competitors.
  • Samsung seems to be evaluating the component needed for the said 200MP camera and if all goes well, we might see the iPhone 21 Pro Max in 2028 sporting the ginormous sensor coupled with multispectral imaging technology for greater details.

Imagine a 200MP iPhone camera. Seems like it won’t turn out to be true, doesn’t it? Well, it turns out Apple could be experimenting with the tech that could bring a ginormous 200MP camera on board the iPhone, probably in a year or two.

Get ready for a 200MP iPhone camera coming soon

Back in May, we started hearing about Apple’s 200MP telephoto shooter on board an iPhone. Cut to now, tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) mentions that there are discussions going on in the supply chain about a probable 200MP iPhone camera, although there are no engineering prototypes in the pipeline just yet.

Turns out an investor note from Morgan Stanley that came this week also suggests the Cupertino-based giant is working on a 200MP iPhone as early as 2028. Apple could be working on adopting the tech because its competitors have already been using it. In 2023, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra was rolled out with a 200MP camera, while iPhones are currently stuck at 48MP shooters. Yes, with a 200MP camera, iPhones will be able to shoot photos with better details and higher resolution without worrying about loss of image quality.

We could see some sort of timeline here…

It seems legit, given the probable timeline of 2028, when the iPhone 21 series will drop by. Apple will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of iPhones next year, and that’s when we will see the iPhone 20 series making its debut while skipping the iPhone 19 series.

Note that current Pro-series iPhones are being tested with a 48MP primary cam with variable aperture and a 48MP telephoto shooter with a larger aperture and focal length. This will perhaps become apparent with the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max launching later this year. Perhaps Apple wants to emphasize low-light photography and flexibility without yanking the resolution just yet.

Anyhow, from what the sources tell us, Samsung will be supplying the 200MP camera sensor, for which the components are currently being evaluated at Samsung. Apple appears to be interested in multispectral imaging technology that could perhaps improve object detection and image processing. Ultimately, this will benefit the end user with excellent photography results.
