Apple is lagging behind its Android OEMs rivals in terms of 5G capable smartphone, however, it might not be for long as Apple is rumored to change everything in 2020 with its massive 2020 iPhones launch.
According to a Nikkei report, Apple will introduce Qualcomm’s X55 5G modems on its 2020 iPhones that will increase data standards across the globe. Apparently, X55 5G modem is currently the most advanced 5G modem available and with the inclusion, 2020 iPhones will get their way with 5G network leaving its competitors in peril even though it is more than two years late in the 5G scene.
Apart from that, Apple will also introduce Apple A14 SoC next year that will be integrated into 5G iPhones. The best thing about the upcoming chipsets is the fact that these will be fabricated using the most advanced 5nm manufacturing process mastered by China-based TSMC which achieved a milestone in April this year with the new process that enables it to manufacture System-on-Chip (SoCs) at an incredible 5nm process. Apart from Apple, it is only Huawei which has plans to incorporate its Kirin chipsets with a 5nm process while others might stick to 7nm and 7nm+ process.
Apple opted for a more aggressive target date of 2022 for its own modems after it acquired Intel’s modem making business for a staggering $1 billion. However, it turns out to be a more realistic date could be 2024 as it would take Apple almost three years to set up the modem making wing and manufacture it.
There’s more though. Apple will introduce a flexible OLED display across at least two or as per a different report, all three 2020 iPhones will get the flexible OLED displays which are more vibrant, bright, and flexible when compared to LCD panels that Apple has been using for a decade now.
Apple introduces OLED panel in its 2017 iPhone X which apparently had a curved bottom edge that allowed it to keep the chin slim compared to its rivals. In fact, Apple’s rivals didn’t even bother using this technique to reduce the size of the chin which made iPhone X a big success among other features.
Apple introduces a 3D-sensing facial recognition technology with iPhone X as well and apparently, the Cupertino-based company is working on a revamped 3D-sensing rear camera that would allow it to excel in AR applications. A 3D sensing camera will allow iPhones to have AR applications like games and whatnot.
Finally, as per Apple, it is expected to sell 80 million units of 2020 iPhones which isn’t a far stretched figure since Apple already sells 75 to 80 million units in a year. The best thing about Apple’s 5G-enabled 2020 iPhones is that it will allow carriers to make a far wider 5G infrastructure by investing more. This should improve 5G coverage which is currently limited to a few countries in a few isolated areas of a small number of cities since 5G tech is really expensive and Apple would chug in a huge chunk of it if it launched 5G iPhones next year.
