Audi made a few attempts to launch an electric version of its beloved Audi R8, however, things didn’t work out so well. But it seems like the carmaker is back on track and the work on a next-gen electric Audi R8 has begun according to Olive Hoffman, the person that leads Audi’s Technical Development.
Audi is moving to full electric platform by 2026
The carmaker has been vocal about ceasing production of combustion-based engines by 2025. It has planned to go full electric starting in 2026 and has developed a platform to underpin such a tectonic shift. Dubbed the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), Audi’s R8 could be one of the models that it will work on.
According to Audi’s timeline, the carmaker will launch Q6 E-Tron in 2024 with Porsche on their Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture. Following this launch, Porsche has plans to roll out a high-performance sports car codenamed ‘the K1’ that brings onboard luxury interior and superior performance. It is slated to arrive later this decade. Porsche, a VW Group company, plans to launch an EV-only Macan based on SSP. SSP is expected to underpin 80% of the EVs for the group in the coming years.
Details about the next-gen EV Audi R8 are scarce. It is a flagship model from Audi synonymous with the ‘sign of the times’. The four ring carmaker failed twice to roll out an iteration of EV R8, however, it seems like this is the right time to give it another try.
Audi will cease to produce cars with combustion engines in 2025 which means going electric is the way to go. Details regarding the EV Audi R8 are scarce, although we do know that the work on this particular model has begun. Stay tuned to True-Tech for more such content.
