Dolby Laboratories has announced Dolby Vision 2, a major update to its picture technology that the company says will begin “a new era” for television viewing. This update includes a redesigned image engine, new features that use artificial intelligence, and better tools for creators. The goal is to unlock the full potential of modern TVs and improve the viewing experience for everyone.

A decade of Dolby Vision innovation

For more than ten years, Dolby Vision has been the top standard for great picture quality. With Dolby Vision 2, the company wants to match today’s fast-changing TV technology while also giving filmmakers and broadcasters new and better ways to be creative.

“Dolby Vision 2 redefines how we think of Dolby Vision to unleash the full capabilities of modern TVs while giving artists unprecedented opportunities to push their creative boundaries,” said John Couling, Senior Vice President of Entertainment at Dolby Laboratories.

Next-generation Dolby image engine

The core of Dolby Vision 2 is a new image engine that is designed to work with all of Dolby’s existing content, including movies, TV shows, live sports, and video games. According to Dolby, this upgrade improves brightness, color accuracy, and contrast, all while ensuring the content looks exactly as the creators intended.

New AI-powered Content Intelligence features include:

  • Precision Black – Improves shadow detail and reduces complaints that content appears “too dark.”
  • Light Sense – Uses ambient light detection and source-based reference data to optimize viewing conditions.
  • Sports and Gaming Optimization – Adjusts white points and motion control for smoother, more dynamic performance.

Additionally, bi-directional tone mapping gives creators new control to tailor their content to the capabilities of modern high-brightness, wide-color-gamut TVs.

Expanding beyond HDR

Dolby Vision 2 improves upon the original HDR format by adding features like Authentic Motion. This new tool lets filmmakers precisely control motion on a shot-by-shot basis to make content look more cinematic and reduce unwanted choppiness.

Dolby will offer the technology in two product tiers:

  • Dolby Vision 2 Max – Premium features for high-end TVs, delivering the best possible performance.
  • Dolby Vision 2 – Core improvements designed to elevate mainstream televisions.

Industry adoption

Hisense will be the first TV brand to launch Dolby Vision 2-enabled models, powered by the MediaTek Pentonic 800 chip with “MiraVision™ Pro” PQ Engine. Availability details are expected to be announced soon.

“Dolby Vision 2, together with Hisense RGB-MiniLED technology, unlocks astonishing picture quality with ultra-wide color and ultra-high brightness,” said Sonny Ming, GM of Hisense TV Product Marketing.

Meanwhile, CANAL+ will integrate Dolby Vision 2 across its movies, series, and live sports broadcasts.

“With the launch of Dolby Vision 2, our subscribers will enjoy an unparalleled viewing experience that sets new standards for picture quality,” said Stéphane Baumier, Chief Technology Officer of CANAL+.

With Dolby Vision 2, Dolby wants to set a new standard for the best TV picture quality. By using a new image processor, features that use AI, and more creative tools, the technology aims to improve how people experience everything from movies to live sports.
