Lovecraft Country scores 18 Emmy nominations following HBO cancellation

Lovecraft Country is one of the recently launched series that has received critical acclaim when it premiered on HBO in August 2020. But sadly, HBO has recently established that the series will not return for another season. Cut to 10 days, Lovecraft Country has now earned the dubious distinction of scoring the most-ever Emmy nominations for a canceled sci-fi/horror series. The series scored 18 nominations including outstanding drama series, outstanding lead actor for Jonathan Majors, and outstanding lead actress for Jurnee Smollett, with the latter two nominations making history as the first time two black lead actors from the same series have been nominated.

Lovecraft Country is based on Matt Ruff’s novel of the same name. The novel served as the blueprint for the show’s first season. As for the show’s plot, it is about a young black man who travels across the segregated 1950s US in search of his missing father, learning of dark secrets plaguing a town. The series is created by Misha Green. J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele are executive producers. Green had already pitched story ideas for the Lovecraft Country Season 2, but HBO seemingly was not interested in continuing the series. This comes as a shocker to not only the fans but also the cast and crew. It is also reported that a few cast members had also cleared their schedules for the second season of the series.

In a statement to Deadline, HBO said, “We will not be moving forward with the second season of Lovecraft Country. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.” While fans might hope for a season two of Lovecraft Country because of all the Emmy nominations and huge season one cliffhanger, the possibility could be complex as Green deemed the cancellation as amicable. Not just that, all the actors and Green are having future projects lined up.
