All the latest top-end smartphones have Corning Gorilla Glass 5 which was tested to withstand 11 drops from a 1-meter height on a rough surface is currently the most versatile and highly protective glass in use. Corning, the glassmaker behind Gorilla Glasses, has launched the next version i.e. Gorilla Glass 6 in an official launch event which is expected to roll out on high-end devices later this year. According to Corning, Gorilla Glass 6 survived an average of 15 drops from a height of 1 meter on a rough surface as opposed to 11 drops survived by Gorilla Class 5 on a similar setting.

Today, protecting smartphones from drops is the epic feat that every smartphone manufacturer wants to obtain. People have been opting for a smartphone that gives a higher degree of protection against drops and that is what was revealed by a survey done on more than 85,000 global consumers. Corning asked all the participants about the ‘must-have’ feature in glass cover on their phone and nearly 50% of the participants opted from readability as a desirable trait while scratch resistance and protection against any potential drops aka durability remain the topmost priority.

It is possible to shatter the phone screens when it is subjected to bents, bumps or squeezed when in a bag or pocket along with potential drops on the ground. Corning achieves the feat of engineering a glass cover that withstands at an average drops of 15 which is two times better than the previous version. Gorilla Glass 6 has maintained the same level of scratch resistance as its previous version though.

Corning achieved the feat of engineering the sixth version of Gorilla Glass 6 by chemically strengthening the glass used that was subjected to extreme compression that resulted in a glass cover that can be used both at front or back panel and gives drop protection at multiple times rather than shattering at the first or maybe the fifth fall or so if the consumer is too clumsy.

The Corning Gorilla Glass 6 is expected to roll out on premium smartphones such as the upcoming iPhones slated to launch in September, the revamped Galaxy S9 that will hit the market in the first quarter of 2019, Google Pixel which is slated to release in October among others.

Apart from Corning Gorilla Glass 6, Corning also launched its two new variants for wearable devices i.e. Gorilla Glass DX and Gorilla Glass DX+. Both the variants have a high anti-reflective property that enhances the scratch resistance and optical clarity while it preserves the toughness, durability, and sensitivity of Gorilla Glass. While Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ have the same amount of durability and toughness, the DX+ is higher in terms of scratch resistance when compared to DX.

Corning has also introduced its ‘Vibrant Glass’ collection that was first introduced in 2016. There are few vivid and vibrant designs embossed on the inner surface of these glass cover such as the texture of a snakeskin, wood, and among others. Corning showcased the prowess of the ‘Vibrant Glass’ concept by showing a Lenovo laptop featuring ‘Star Wars’ poster. It also showcased a variety of designs for smartphones. Watch out for Corning Gorilla Glass 6 later this year.
