Rumors suggest Google might take the wraps off its Pixel 5a smartphone next month. The device is for budget smartphone enthusiasts and what we are really looking forward to is the Google Pixel 6 series. Based on the initial renders, the series will be the first premium flagship offering from the company. Don’t get me wrong, previous flagships were great but all of them have always lagged behind the competition when it comes to design, hardware, and other factors. But, from what we know so far, the Google flagship scene is about to change with the launch of the Pixel 6 series.
After staying under the realm for quite some time, the leaks and rumors around the upcoming flagship series from Google started to rise. Recently, Jon Prosser of FrontPageTech revealed the complete specification sheets of the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. While specifications aren’t too surprising, Prosser claims that Google is hoping to commit to five years of software updates for the Pixel 6 series. While it is unclear whether both the phones get five generations of OS updates or four generations of OS updates plus one year of a security update. Or it could be a combination of OS updates plus security updates of five years. Either way, it is great news as Android devices have always lagged behind Apple devices when it comes to software support. I mean, a six-year-old iPhone 6S still gets the latest iOS 15 whereas a less than four-year-old Pixel 2 does not get Android 12.
Google Pixel 6 Series Specifications
The Pixel 6 is codenamed “Oriole” and according to the spec sheet revealed by FrontPageTech, the device features a 6.4-inch AMOLED display. Previous renders suggested a full-HD+ flat display with a punch-hole display notch located at the top center. While the display refresh rate is not confirmed, we expect it to be a 90Hz or 120Hz display. Google being Google, it might launch the Pixel 6 with only a dual-camera setup that consists of a 50MP primary sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor. On the front is where you can find an 8MP selfie shooter. The device features 8GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB of storage options to choose from. As expected, the device will run Android 12 out of the box. All this is backed by a 4614 mAh battery.
As for the Pixel 6 Pro, the device is codenamed “Raven” and it boasts 6.71-inch P-OLED display. Leaked renders suggested a curved display instead of the flat one found on the Pixel 6. The resolution is expected to be QHD+ and is likely to feature a 120Hz display refresh rate. Unlike the vanilla Pixel 6, the Pro variant is expected to feature triple rear cameras with a 50MP primary shooter coupled with a 48MP telephoto sensor and a 12MP ultrawide sensor. That said, the device features 12GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB of onboard storage. The battery is a bit larger at 5000 mAh.
This leak from Prosser also ties with another rumor that claims Google plans to use self-designed silicon in the Pixel 6 series of smartphones. This lets Google offer Android updates for Pixel devices for more than three years as the chipset manufacturers like Qualcomm and MediaTek ditch their older chipsets after a certain amount of time making it harder for smartphone makers to push updates. Now, if Google really makes its own Silicon, it could technically offer updates as long as it wants. But, taking Apple into account, we can expect Google to push OS updates for five years at least. That said, do consider this will a grain of salt until we hear anything official from Google. Also, it is worth noting that Prosser has a shaky history with Pixel leaks.
