Google has started rolling out its September 2025 Pixel Drop update, which brings many new features to Pixel phones, tablets, earbuds, and smartwatches. The update includes the new Material 3 Expressive design, along with other practical improvements for Google’s devices. The update is being released today and will continue to roll out over the next few weeks.
Material 3 Expressive expands beyond Pixel 10
The new Pixel 10 phones already came with the new Material 3 Expressive design, which focuses on smooth use and personalization. Now, Google is bringing this same design to older devices, including the Pixel 6 and all newer models, as well as the Pixel Tablet. This was confirmed by the company in an official announcement.
The Material 3 Expressive update brings new customization tools to Pixel devices. You can use Live Effects to add dynamic shapes and weather patterns to your lock screen wallpaper. The Quick Settings menu has also been redesigned to look cleaner and more organized. Additionally, the Phone by Google app now has more personalization options for your calling experience.

Smarter audio features with Pixel Buds Pro 2
Later this month, Pixel Buds Pro 2 will get a new feature called Adaptive Audio. This feature will smartly adjust the sound to match your surroundings, helping you stay aware while still enjoying your music. Additionally, a feature called Loud Noise Protection will be added. This will help protect your hearing by lowering the volume of sudden, loud sounds like a passing siren.
Google has also made it possible to use the Gemini assistant hands-free, even in loud places. Owners of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 can answer calls or dismiss notifications just by nodding or shaking their head, without needing to touch their phone.
Seamless navigation across devices
The September update also improves how Pixel devices work together. You can now start walking or biking directions on your Pixel phone, and Google Maps will automatically appear on your connected Pixel Watch. This hands-free feature makes it much more convenient to get around, especially in new places where you don’t want to keep checking your phone.
