Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 970 SoC is just a few months ago and we have seen it on Mate 10 and P20 series but the Chinese smartphone maker is developing a new system on a chip for its upcoming Mate 20 series. Touted as Kirin 980, the new SoC will power the Mate 20 series, preferably Mate 20 Pro. It features an octa-core architecture with four A76 cores and four A55 cores. The best thing about Kirin 980 SoC is that the larger cores i.e. A76 will run as fast as 2.8 GHz according to Huawei’s press release issued on South African media.

The Kirin 980 will be produced by TSMC which is a China-based chip manufacturer where 7nm manufacturing process will be employed to improve the performance of the processor. The 7nm process promises hike in processor speed up to 20 percent while the power consumption will be brought down by 40 percent compared to a 10nm process.

The Kirin 970 had an AI feature too that was seen in Honor Play and similarly, the Kirin 980 will have AI enabled that will improve the performance of the processor based on machine-learning. There is no specific date selected by Huawei to release its Mate 20 series but it will be sometime in October which is just a month away from today.

As per what we know till date, the Huawei Mate 20 Lite features a 6.3-inch display with dual camera setup at the rear and will be powered by Kirin 710 SoC and on the contrary, the Mate 20 Pro will sport a 6.25-inch display with notch and a Kirin 980 AI processor preferably. The Kirin 980 processor will be officially rolled out in Berlin at the IFA Congress in few weeks.
