There is a lot of space for manufacturers to fill in the foldable smartphone market. It has been a while since Samsung has launched its Galaxy Z Fold 2, which has to be the best foldable phone yet, and Huawei is planning to fill up the space soon. The Chinese tech giant has recently confirmed that it is going to take the wraps off its Huawei Mate X2 foldable phone on February 22. Huawei will make its move away from its initial design by ditching the outward folding mechanism that was made available on Huawei Mate X and last year’s Huawei Mate Xs which are made by a Chinese company BOE.
The company is rumored to go with the Samsung display for the upcoming Mate X2. But, Huawei has decided to go with the BOE display once again. According to the report, Samsung and Huawei had an agreement concerning the foldable display panels that were going to be used in the upcoming Mate X2. But, in the end, the agreement did not come through because of the US Commence Department’s trade sanctions and its way of putting barriers between Huawei and its suppliers. The report also suggests that the deal could’ve been approved by the US back in October, but the company has decided not to go with it. It makes a lot of sense as it avoids future problems by using BOE foldable panels. I mean, Huawei has played it safe since the US can never place roadblocks between two Chinese companies.
Huawei Mate X2 is rumored to come with an 8.01-inch inward folding display, just the Galaxy Fold devices, and the display comes with a resolution of 2480 x 220 pixels. On the front of the device, it features another screen that measures 6.45-inches. This display offers a resolution of 2270 x 1160 pixels. As for the optics, the device comes with a 50-megapixel primary camera. We are not sure of whether this is a similar camera found on Huawei Mate 40 Pro or not. But considering that this foldable device is a part of the Mate lineup, we can expect the same 50 MP Ultravision camera on the Mate X2 too. This 50 MP primary sensor on the Mate X2 is accompanied by a 16 MP Ultrawide camera and 12 MP telephoto camera. There is also a fourth sensor of 8 MP here, which could be the periscope lens. The leak also claims that the Mate X2 sports a 10x hybrid optical zoom. On the front, there is a 16 MP sensor.
Under the hood, the device will be powered by the HinSilicon Kirin 9000 SoC coupled with 8 GB of RAM. This is the same SoC found on the Mate 40 Pro and was first introduced with Huawei P40. This SoC integrates eight CPU cores in three clusters with a single high-performance ARM Cortex A77 clocked up to 3.13 GHz coupled with three more performance cores with 2.54 GHz and four efficiency cores based on ARM Cortex-A55 architecture with up to 2.05 GHz. ARM Mali-G78 MP24 handles the graphic duties here. All this is backed by a 4,400 mAh battery which is expected to come with support for 66W fast charging.
Huawei Mate X2 sounds like a great deal, at least on paper. All the Huawei devices launched last year do have the potential and excellent specs but an Android device without Google Play Services is not encouraged at the moment. Hopefully, the company can manage to integrate and develop its App Store of its own that supports all the applications and services.
