  • Huawei launches two new tablets dubbed as MatePad Pro 12.2 and MatePad Air (2024).
  • MatePad Pro 12.2 features a dual-layer OLED panel, Kirin 9010 SoC, and 100W fast charging tech along with a slim profile.
  • MatePad Air (2024) uses a OLED panel with 66W fast charging tech and a 5.9mm profile making it thicker than MatePad Pro.

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei introduced a pair of new tablets earlier today dubbed MatePad Pro 12.2 (2024) and MatePad Air (2024). The Pro packs in a 12.2” dual-layer OLED panel, and it is surprisingly thinner and lighter than MatePad Air (2024). Let’s break down both tabs along with their specs, pricing, and availability.

Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2 (2024) Announced with Dual-Layer OLED Panel; MatePad Air Tags Along

Starting with the top-of-the-line product, MatePad Pro 12.2 (2024) features a sleek design with a circular rear cam and a thin build of just 5.5mm. It is thinner than MatePad Air (2024) while being lighter at 508g.

On the front, we have a 12.2” dual-layer OLED panel boasting a resolution of 2800 × 1840 pixels. The display rocks at a 144Hz refresh rate so that you don’t miss any details. The specs sheet mentions a 92% screen-to-body ratio, 2000 nits of peak brightness, 1.07 billion colors, a 2000000:1 contrast ratio, and an ultra-low delta of E<1 that reduces interference of light by 99%. The display is a killer feature here for that combined, draws less power from the battery compared to regular OLED displays.

MatePad Air (2024), on the other hand, uses a 12” Soft Light Edition display with a 30-144Hz refresh rate, a 2.8K resolution, up to 1,000 nits of peak brightness, and a P3 wide color gamut. Interestingly, MatePad Air has ‘Air’ in the name but still clocks in at 555g in terms of weight and 5.9mm in thickness. This ultimately makes the Pro look more ‘Air-ish’ than the MatePad Air itself.

Huawei didn’t disclose the processor in use, although we presume it is Kirin 9010 right from the Pura 70 Series. We don’t know what’s the case with Air yet although Huawei mentioned memory configurations on both i.e., up to 1TB of storage (on both) and 12GB of RAM on Air and 16GB on Pro.

A 5,050mAh dual-cell battery takes care of power requirements which is equivalent to a 10,100mAh battery. There’s 100W Turbo charging support that takes the battery from 0 to 100% in just 55 minutes. The only catch on MatePad Air (2024) is, it cuts back to a 66W charging tech that should take approx 1.3 hours to juice up the battery.

When it comes to the optics, both the tabs have the same camera setup. It includes a 13MP primary plus an 8MP ultrawide shooter. The distinction can be seen with the front camera which is 16MP on the Pro and 8MP on the Air, although I wouldn’t say it requires a rocket science degree that both will perform approximately the same.

Other features that the siblings share are dual-band Wi-Fi, GPS, USB 3.1 Gen 1, Bluetooth v5.2, an optical fingerprint scanner, and Huawei Sound, among others. The duo runs on HarmonyOS 4.2, the latest, featuring Celia AI for your writing purposes. It also supports PC-level apps such as WPS Office, document management, and beyond.
