This has now become a known norm after the release of a new iPhone that the higher storage variants of the previous gen iPhones will be discontinued. Something similar has also happened to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus after the recent release of the iPhone 8 series. This becomes even more important after the lethargic sales of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
Unlike the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, that were launched with two storage variants each, the iPhone 7 series was launched with three storage variants – 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The iPhone 8 now comes with either 64GB storage or 256GB storage option. A report suggests that Apple officially discontinued the 256GB iPhone 7 and 7 Plus on the same day iPhone 8 was announced, i.e. September 12.
What it means is that you won’t be able to get the said storage variant of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus from the Apple Store anymore. You might, however, find the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus retailing in the other stores with the 256GB storage option. But this also wouldn’t last for long as they are most probably exhausting their old stock and Apple won’t be making the 256GB variant of the last year’s flagship anymore.
This is Apple’s clear effort to boost the iPhone 8’s sales which haven’t been great so far. Most of the credit for this slow sales goes to the Apple’s very own upcoming iPhone X. The iPhone X has been designed from scratch and offers much more for a price that is not too higher than what Apple is asking for the 256GB variant of the iPhone 8 Plus.
After the discontinuation of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus 256GB variant, people who wish to get an iPhone with higher storage space are left with no other choice than the iPhone 8. The official Apple website now also mentions only the 32GB and 128GB variant of the iPhone. While 128GB storage space is quite enough for most users, but in case you’re looking for a 256GB iPhone and don’t want to invest so much of money in the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are still a bargain.
