The Indian streaming industry is undergoing a major transformation with the merger of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar into a unified platform called JioHotstar. The new service was launched under the joint venture JioStar, a collaboration between Viacom18 and Star India. It plans to overhaul entertainment in India with an extensive content library and a vast user base.
A massive content library and user base
JioHotstar boasts an impressive 300,000 hours (3 lakh hours) of content, making it one of the largest streaming platforms in India. With a user base exceeding 500 million (50 crore), the platform is set to dominate the Indian OTT market.
According to the company, the app’s identity represents boundless entertainment, symbolized by the ‘Big Bang’, which marks the beginning of a new era, and the ‘Ripples’, which depict energy, transformation, and innovation.
JioStar merger
In February 2023, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Viacom18, and Disney announced a joint venture. The deal aims to combine Viacom18 and Star India, valued at ₹70,352 crore (approximately $8.5 billion). The transaction was successfully completed in November 2024, paving the way for the launch of JioHotstar.
A one-stop destination for global and Indian content
JioHotstar offers a comprehensive content library, bringing together the best of Hollywood and Indian entertainment. The platform will feature content from major global studios, including:

What happens to existing JioCinema subscribers?
If you are a JioCinema subscriber, you will automatically receive a JioHotstar Premium subscription for the same duration as your current JioCinema plan. However, JioCinema subscriptions will not be renewed from February 15, 2025.
After your JioCinema subscription expires, you will have the option to choose from the JioHotstar plans. If you currently have both JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar subscriptions, you will get JioHotstar Premium for the same duration as your JioCinema subscription, while your Disney+ Hotstar subscription will continue as usual.
