Ahead of CES 2018, LG has just announced its new 88-inch 8K OLED display, which is the first of its kind in the world. The displays boast of a resolution of 33 million pixels (7680×4320 pixels), which is sixteen times more than Full HD (1920×1080) and four times more than UHD (3840×2160). Earlier, the largest display size was 77-inch and the resolution was still 4K.
As OLEDs are self-emissive, they do not need backlight units, so they can maintain their slimmer design. LG also said that it uses its in-house innovations in panel design and fine processing to create 8K resolution OLED displays. LG also claimed that the 33 million self-emissive OLED pixels in each 8K OLED display create more delicate images and unmatched picture quality.
It is being expected that LG will showcase the huge 88-inch 8K OLED display at the Las Vegas Convention Center during CES 2018. Commenting on the new OLED display, In-Byung Kang, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at LG Display, said, “The successful development of the world’s first 8K OLED display is a milestone for the 8K era and underscores the exciting potential of OLED.” He also added, “OLED is clearly a next-generation technology leader and for this reason, LG Display is accelerating its research and development into OLED so that we can provide differentiated products to customers and markets.”
Currently, the biggest size of an OLED display is 77-inch with 4K, but even with the 8K resolution and increase in size, LG will face competitions from Samsung, which also has an 88-inch TV with 2,160p (4K) resolution, HDR, and built-in Wi-Fi. Samsung’s 88-inch 4K TV is priced at around $20,000 (Rs 12,74,500), while the price of LG’s 88-inch 8K TV is still unknown. It is expected to be priced higher as currently, LG’s 77-inch model sells for $20,000. Now, after LG launches the new 88-inch TV the only debatable point will be probably the OLED and QLED, which is the technology used by Samsung in their 88-inch TV.
