Since Lenovo took over Motorola we’ve experienced a lot of changes made to the aesthetics and many other aspects of its devices. Lenovo might be going retro this time by bringing the Motorola Razr back to life. Other than the Nokia 8810 (and Nokia 3310 from last year), we haven’t seen any “blast from the past” devices at the MWC 2018 which is currently going on at Barcelona.
Lenovo’s CEO Yang Yuanqing had a talk with TechRadar where he may have hinted that the Motorola Razr series will make a comeback. Yang said:
With the new technology, particularly foldable displays, I think you will see more and more innovations in our smartphone designs
The Motorola Razr series was one of the best-selling phone lineup in the early 2000s having sold over 130 million units of only one of its variants. Although, after the introduction of the touch displays on Samsung and LG devices, the Motorla phone eventually dropped dead.
A few years back, the company teased that it may revive the Razr series and reports also said that the phone will run Android OS but we didn’t heard anything from them until now. Motorola released a video in 2016 in which the Motorola Razr made an appearance and brought back the good memories of the device. Yang last year told CNBC that if Lenovo has any plans on reviving a device which the fans have fond memories of, it’ll be “a stronger and a better product than the original”.
Yang was very keen on not sharing any of the details about the device. Motorola might be taking an interest in the flexible displays which have already been patented by a few major smartphone makers, according to some reports. The Razr series fans would rejoice if the phone ever makes a comeback but there’s no information on how the device will look or when will it make a comeback. We expect to know more about it in the coming months.
