  • ChatGPT-famed OpenAI is working on a family of AI devices and an AI phone could be the first to arrive.
  • Slated to arrive in 2028, the AI Phone replaces apps with task streams where AI agents take over tasks, eliminating dependence on apps.

An OpenAI phone is heading our way with a potential release in 2028. The ChatGPT-famed giant has expressed its intentions to roll out a family of AI devices from earbuds to a pen and whatnot. However, what’s more interesting is that OpenAI is reportedly working with Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Luxshare on an AI phone that could primarily run on Android OS.

OpenAI is working on an AI-agentic phone

This comes from tipster Ming-Chi Kuo, a reputed analyst and tipster, according to whom Kuo is working on an AI agentic smartphone that could work on a custom chipset fabbed by Qualcomm and MediaTek. Additionally, Luxshare could be its co-design and manufacturing partner.

What’s different about the OpenAI phone?

First things first, current-gen phones work on apps as users hail these applications to get work done. For instance, if you want to book a flight, you use Trip or MMT; similarly, the Booking app can be used for hotel booking, and so on. However, a true AI phone could change our experience on a smartphone.

Turns out OpenAI is working on AI agents for its AI phone. Unlike regular apps, this phone could create something called Task Stream, where users just have to instruct, and the agentic AI will take care of the rest. Think about ordering pizza from your favorite restaurant where you don’t have to manually tap and tap again, but rather instruct the AI agent to take care of the rest. The phone will use an Agentic AI interface to get things done.

Unfortunately, neither Sam Altman, the man behind ChatGPT, nor John Ivy, famed for his design contributions at Apple, confirmed the existence of an AI phone. It is still too early to comment anyway, since we are talking about a potential timeline of 2028, so watch this space to find out more info.
