We all know that Chinese smartphone makers are increasing rapidly and are growing exponentially in terms of market share and product lineup across all sectors right from budget to high-end premium smartphones. Oppo is one of the most popular Chinese brands and has It’s uber-popular Reno series that has already seen two generations and will be reporting the third generation of devices by the end of this year.
Oppo has been closely relying on MediaTek and Qualcomm processors for years for its smartphones, however, as per the latest update, Oppo is planning its own mobile processor aka chipset that will be summoned as Oppo M1.
Oppo expressed its interest in competitors against Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek back in August 2019. This led to many reports from Chinese media houses about Oppo’s inclusion in the development of its own chipset that will allow it to compete against its rivals including brands like Samsung and Apple that already have their own chipsets in place.
Talking about the chipset, media house LetsGoDigital found an entry at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) where a trademark application was submitted on November 20th, 2019, by Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications which makes it clear that it is a chipset.
As per the reports are concerned, we aren’t informed on why Oppo has resorted to name its chipset as ‘M1’ where we don’t know what’s ‘M’ stands for but there are theories. Reportedly, it could be simply a moniker such as how Apple uses ‘A’ series for its bionic chipsets. There are a lot of questions associated with the chipset such as if Oppo will reserve the M1 chipsets for its smartphones or if it will integrate it with other devices as well.
Apart from that, Oppo is working towards making its smartphones 5G ready which means its chipsets could have 5G modems as well. Although LetsGoDigital has quoted a few events where Oppo could showcase its chipset, it seems highly unlikely since it takes a lot of time to design and manufacture a chipset such as Apple has resorted to a date later than 2023 for its own chipsets even though it has acquired Intel’s modem-making business for a whopping $1 billion.
Oppo has established its own R&D center in Chang’an Town in Guangdong province where it is headquartered. This is the place where Oppo will be doing all the R&D related work.
As per the timeline, LetsGoDigital states that Oppo could showcase its new chipset at MWC 2020 in Barcelona at the end of February 2020. If not that, Oppo could showcase the same at Semicon China to be held in Shanghai in March 2020 although Oppo hasn’t signed up as an exhibitor for the event. Another probable date for its showcase could be at the MWC Shanghai 2020 to be held by the end of June next year. We will have to wait for more information to arrive at about the same.
