At the Qualcomm 5G Snapdragon Summit, the San Diego-based chipmaker launched the Snapdragon 778G chipset to the world. It is a chipset falling between SD750G and SD780G and offers enormous upgrades over its predecessor Snapdragon 768G. For context, it is a slightly toned-down version of the Snapdragon 780G SoC that was released last year in March fabricated on a 5nm Samsung process.
The new Snapdragon 778G SoC is built on a 6nm TSMC process giving much-needed upgrades over Snapdragon 768G SoC. This includes better CPU and GPU permissions as well AI and ISP performances that I have explained below.
All About Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G SoC
Snapdragon 778G SoC is fabricated on a 6nm TSMC process which puts it behind the Snapdragon 780G SoC (5nm). It has a Kryo 670 CPU designed to offer up to 40 percent better performance than its predecessor. The same story is followed by the upgraded Adreno 642L GPU delivering up to 40 percent faster graphics rendering than others. The chipset also has 2nd-gen Qualcomm Sensing Hub and a low-power Hexagon 770 processor for a better AI experience on the chipset.
Moving forwards, the chipset is equipped with the Qualcomm Spectra 570L triple ISP that enables it to capture triple images at up to 22MP resolution as well as support up to 4K HDR10+ video recording.
Snapdragon 778G SoC has a myriad of features including support to multi-gigabit class Wi-Fi 6 and 6E delivering up to 2.9Gbps of download speeds. The chipset supports Bluetooth v5.2 as well as supports QZSS, NavIC, Galileo, BeiDou, Glonass, and A-GPS.
The chipset sports a Snapdragon X53 5G modem for 5G connectivity and supports both sub-6 GHz 5G and mmWave networks.
Finally, the chipset supports LPDDR5 RAM up to 3200MHz frequency and up to 16GB of capacity which is highly likely to reach for a mid-range phone although flagship smartphones that use Snapdragon 800-series chipsets will surely reach the 16GB RAM mark. Snapdragon 778G SoC also supports FHD+ up to 144Hz as well as 4K displays at 60Hz and have both HDR10 and HDR10+ coverage.
The chipset will be made available commercially in the second quarter of 2021 and we are already in Q2 2021. Smartphone brands like Xiaomi, Realme, Oppo, Motorola, iQOO, and Honor have planned to roll out smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 778G SoC, however, we are unaware of any updates from other vendors at least at the time of writing this. Also, Honor will be the first OEM to release a smartphone carrying the new SD778G SoC with its upcoming Honor 50 series.
