Qualcomm is making the mid-range smartphones ready for the features that will now flow down from the top crop. The Snapdragon 636 processor has been announced with support for all the features that we’ll be seeing in the budget smartphones in the coming months. The chip maker has also significantly improved the performance of the processor over its predecessors, more on this later.
Those 18:9 elongated displays and dual cameras that are still a part of the flagship-class smartphones will soon be ported to the lower-end phones. The Snapdragon 636 will ensure that you get all the top-tier features without having to dig a hole in your pocket. The newly announced processor will succeed the Snapdragon 630, which is yet to be seen on a lot of phones.
The highlight of the processor is the support for tall FHD+ display with a max resolution of 2160 x 1080. Thanks to this processor, people with a tight budget will soon be able to own a futuristic looking smartphone. With that, the support for dual cameras has also been provided, but up to 16MP + 16MP. This also includes real-time bokeh, which is a feat not even many flagships can achieve today.
While Qualcomm has included these features, the performance of the CPU has also been upped. The company told that the Snapdragon 633 is 40 percent faster than the 630 with its Kyro 260 CPU. The Adreno 509 GPU, however, is just 10 percent faster than the previous generation. A 600Mbps LTE and Spectra 160 image signal processor has included with this processor, similar to Snapdragon 630. Quick Charge 4.0 is also a part of this package now.
Qualcomm revealed that the Snapdragon 636 will be made available to the smartphone manufacturers starting next month itself. But the first devices to come with this processor onboard will be out only by early 2018. The best part is that the new processor will be compatible with all the devices that were originally meant to come with either Snapdragon 630 or 660 processor.
